چکیده

We report photometry and spectroscopy of the evolution of Nova Sagittarii 1994 #1 (V4332 Sagittarii) during outburst. We compare the photometric and spectral evolution of this outburst to known classes of outbursts – including classical novae and outbursts occurring on symbiotic stars – and find this object does not conform to any known class of outburst. The closest match to the behavior of this unusual object is M31 RV, an extremely luminous and red variable object discovered in the bulge of M31 in 1988. However, the temporal behavior and maximum luminosity of the two events differ by several orders of magnitude, requiring substantial intrinsic variation if these two events are members the same type of outburst. Our model of the spectroscopic evolution of this outburst shows that the effective temperature cooled from 4400 K to 2300 K over the three month span of our observations. In combination with line diagnostics in our later spectra, including [OI] λ5577 and the dramatic increase in the Hα to Hβ ratio, we infer the existence of a Postal Address: Steward Observatory, University of Arizona, Tucson, AZ 85721

A Second Luminous Blue Variable in the Quintuplet Cluster.

H- and K-band moderate-resolution and 4 µm high-resolution spectra have been obtained for FMM 362, a bright star in the Quintuplet Cluster near the Galactic center. The spectral features in these bands closely match those of the Pistol Star, a luminous blue variable and one of the most luminous stars known. The new spectra and previously obtained photometry imply a very high luminosity for FMM ...

Sn 2006jc: a Wolf-rayet Star Exploding in a Dense He-rich Circumstellar Medium

We present optical photometry and spectra of the peculiar type Ib supernova (SN) 2006jc. Strong He I emission lines indicate the progenitor star exploded inside a dense circumstellar medium (CSM) rich in He. An exceptionally blue continuum persists from our first spectrum obtained 15 days after discovery through our last spectrum ∼1 month later. Based on the presence of isolated Fe II emission ...

Aegis: the Color-magnitude Relation for X-ray Selected Agn

We discuss the relationship between rest-frame color and optical luminosity for X-ray sources in the range 0.6 < z < 1.4 selected from the Chandra survey of the Extended Groth Strip (EGS). These objects are almost exclusively active galactic nuclei (AGN). While there are a few luminous QSOs, most are relatively weak or obscured AGN whose optical colors should be dominated by host galaxy light. ...
